May Minamahal (Loving Somebody, Jose Javier Reyes, 1993)

The father dies, leaving his family struggling with the realization that they are no longer rich. That the otherwise common love story between two individuals from opposing backgrounds (he is from Alabang, while she is from Malibay) is placed in the aftermath of that death where all the family members are quietly salvaging whatever remains in their former upper middle-class existence makes all the difference. The film’s predictably smartly-written by Jose Javier Reyes whose insights on the Filipino middle class, its pretensions, prejudices and insecurities, are nearly always more entertaining than the actual films.
